Muslims celebrate holiday of sacrifice - Kurban-bairam
On January 10 Muslims of Russia participate in solemn sermons and greetings in honor of Islamic holiday Kurban-bairam.
Kurban-bairam is a holiday of sacrifice. This day Muslims sacrificially slab the animal in memory of miraculous rescue of Ismail - beloved son of father of Arabs and first preacher of monotheism Ibrahim.
Kurban-bairan is celebrated on 10-th day of last Muslim month zu-l-hidja. This day annual pilgrimage of believers to Mecca (hajj) ends. Because Muslim moon calendar is11 days shorter than Gregorian, holiday constantly moves ahead. In 2006 Kurban-bairam will be celebrated twice - on January 10 and December 31.
Celebration of Kurban-bairam lasts for 3 days. Muslims will offer up a special prayer, visit graves of ancestors, give meat and other products to poor men. It is also became a tradition to visit friends and make presents. Important part of Kurban-bairam is fast with dishes from meet of sacrificial animal.
Tatars, Azerbaijanians, Bashkirs, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Kyrgyzs, Kazakhs, Chechens confess Islam in Russia.
