Origami-robot independently gathered themselves from a flat sheet
Inspired by the Japanese art of origami, the South American engineers have produced a robot that without the help of others puts himself out flat sheets, stands up on its legs and moves in the right direction. Opening presents in the latest issue of the journal Science.
Robot consists of 5 layers, made on the prescribed instructions laser cutter. The middle layer is a network of copper wires, sandwiched between 2 sheets of paper. The outer layers are made of polymers, shape memory (they change shape when heated to 100 degrees Celsius). The electric wiring and transfer heat to the limbs of the robot. In the end, the material put the microprocessor and 2 engine.
During the final experience thin composite material was transformed into a mobile and fully multifunctional machine in just 4 minutes. It happened because of "baking": heating forced the car to take appropriate form and "stand". After that, the robot has spread with the speed of 5.4 centimeters per second, turning in different directions - without any help from the inhabitants of our planet. It is noted that this is the 1st prototype of a fully Autonomous "samokleyushcheysya" of the robot.
Engineers report that the creation of such robots using laser cutting and etching baths is much faster and cheaper than using 3D printing. Besides all this, origami-materials can be produced independently gathering furniture and short-term housing solutions for the areas of natural disasters.
