Russian ice-breaker returned to Vladivostok after Antarctica expedition
Russian ice-breaker "Krasin" returned to Vladivostok port on Sunday evening after piloting of 2 American ships to USA artic station "Makmerdo".
As press-secretary of Far East shipping company Veronika Kazakova informed, reception in honour of successful completion of extreme expedition was organized by administration of the shipping company.
At first Russian ice-breaker laid the channel in dense ice of Antarctica, then drove freight ship "American Tern" and tanker "Lawrence Gianella" through to American scientific station and back. American ships supplied polar explorers with food, equipment, fuel and other vital goods.
"The ice situation in Artic was rather complicated this year. The thickness of ice fields with cells of icebergs exceeds 2.5 meters. The cut channel needed constant clearing and broadening after freezing. But the crew coped with set goals".
National Scientific Fund of USA declared international tender for piloting of American ships to "Makmerdo" station in summer 2005. Tender was won by Far East shipping company.
