Biography Leblanc, Nicolas (Nicholas Leblanc)
(6.XII.1742 - 16.I.1806)
Technology soda on Leblanu used in many European countries.
French chemical engineer Nicolas Leblanc was born in 1742 in Ivua-le-Preux (Department Sher). About his life remained little information. It is known that he studied medicine, attended lectures on chemistry D. Ruel in the Botanical Gardens of Paris. Since 1780 he worked as a doctor in Orleans. During the French Revolution was the manager powder and saltpeter industries Arsenal and served in several elected positions in the revolutionary authorities.
In 1791, Nicolas Leblanc received a patent for "Method of transformation of Glauber's salt in soda". For soda LeBlanc suggested fusing a mixture of sodium sulphate, chalk (calcium carbonate) and Charcoal. In the description of the invention, he said: "Above the surface of the melting mass of flashing lights, set, similar to the lights of candles. Getting a soda ends when the lights disappear.
When fused mixture of sodium sulphate recovery proceeds coal. The resulting sodium sulfide reacts with calcium carbonate. After complete burnout of coal and carbon monoxide ( "lights disappear"), the melt is cooled and treated with water. In the solution passes sodium carbonate and calcium sulfide remains in the sediment. Soda can be identified by evaporating the solution.
His technology of soda LeBlanc suggested to Philip the Duke of Orleans, his personal physician that he was. In 1789, Duke has signed an agreement with Leblanom and gave him two hundred thousand livres of silver for the construction of the plant. Soda plant in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Genis called "Fransiada - Soda Leblanc and daily gave 100-120 kg of soda. During the French Revolution in 1793 the Duke of Orleans, was executed, his property confiscated, and the soda factory and the patent itself Leblanc - nationalized.
Only seven years later Leblanu returned ruined factory restore which he could no longer. In recent years, Leblanc passed in poverty, and in 1806 he committed suicide.
Technology soda on Leblanu used in many European countries. First soda plant of its kind in Russia was founded by industrialist M. Prang and appeared in Barnaul in 1864.
But after several years in the area of present Berezniki was built a large soda plant firm "Lyubimov, Solvay and Co", which were produced 20 thousand tons of ash annually. This plant uses a new technology of production of soda - an ammonia method, invented by a Belgian chemical engineer Ernest Solvay.
Since then, factories in Russia and other countries, used the method of Leblanc, unable to withstand competition, they were gradually closed: Solvay technology proved to be more economical.
