(p. 1903) - Amer. ethnographer and cultural anthropologist, known for its etnogr. research severoamer. Indians and alortsev, as well as interdisciplinary research processes of modernization and cultural change. Education received in the U.S. (1928 - MA at Columbia University the same; dis. was devoted to the culture and thinking Wed. centuries). Under the influence of Boas and Benedict emerged from her interest in anthropology. In 1929, studies at the University of California-cho, where in 1932 she defended her Doctoral. dis. anthropology. In 1932-35 worked at the University of California-cho, and conducted under the guidance of Kroeber and Lowie series of field studies (customs, cults, religious. submission and mythology severoamer. Indians living in California and Oregon). Working in 1935-36 a member of the National. researchers. council, she finds the need to use in anthropology of Psychology. research methods and explanations. Participates in an interdisciplinary seminar Kardiner in New York. psihoanalitich. on-ve, which is largely determined its subsequent scientific career.
In 1938-39 she conducted extensive field research on the island of Alor (Indonesia). In the center of attention was the problem of the relationship between culture and personality, testing ideas and hypotheses that emerged during the discussions in the seminar Kardiner.
