Biography Wedel Artemiy Lukyanovich
(1767 - 1806), son of Kiev tradesman. He studied at the Kiev Theological Academy, where he managed the student chorus, then he was a regent of the Chapel of the Moscow governor-general, in Moscow, studied at Sarti. Later, led the choir in Kiev and Kharkov. Long time wandering in the Ukraine and indulging in feats of self-denial. By some accounts, at the same time he joined the sect of the Illuminati. Wedel was suspected in the drafting of a political notes and arrested by the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. He managed to defend himself, but for vagrancy, he was imprisoned in a penitentiary in Kiev, where, suffering from melancholia, stayed almost until his death. His works are melodic, simple and expressive. They are still performed by church choirs, mostly in the province.
