. Born May 27, 1874 in Asnieres, near Paris, a French father, his mother an Englishwoman
. He studied at the Sorbonne, earning a living co-operation in the Paris newspapers, but especially known as a journalist has. In 1895 he published a small book of poems Weepers (Les Pleureuses), favorably encountered criticism, in 1908 published his first novel, Hell (L'Enfer). Since the beginning of World War I went to the front rank and file volunteer, was twice decorated, he wrote the novel Fire (Le Feu, 1916), referred to the military experience (Prix Goncourt, 1917) and recognized as one of the best novels about the war. This was followed by a novel on the same topic Clarity (Clarte, 1919).
Barbusse was among the first who started to describe the war with ruthless honesty and disgust, recreating the unrelenting horror of trench everyday life, the death of their husbands and sons. He became the leader of the international association 'Klarte', who dedicated his work promoting pacifism, social equality and international solidarity of intellectuals;
Barbusse also founded the World Committee against War and Fascism
