BEST, Charles Herbert (Best Charles Herbert)

(1899-1978)
Born February 27, 1899 in West Pembroke (pc. Maine, USA). He studied at the University of Toronto, where he earned a bachelor's degree (1921), MA (1922) and Doctor of Medicine (1925). In 1920-1921 he worked at the Department of Physiology, in 1929 became professor and head of the department, from 1922 to 1932 was a Research Fellow of Connaught Laboratories, then Director (1932-1941). Since 1923, Best served as an assistant professor Department of Medical Studies. Bunting and Best in the University of Toronto, and from 1941 to 1967 headed the Department.
In 1921, Best, who then worked together with F. Banting led Dzh.Makleoda, the isolation of the pancreatic hormone insulin dogs. In subsequent experiments, Banting and Best demonstrated that insulin provides a pronounced therapeutic effect of introducing it to patients with diabetes mellitus. For this discovery in 1923, MacLeod and Banting received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Half of the money received Bunting gave the Best.

During the Second World War, Best led the surgical service of the Royal Canadian Volunteer Reserve and Marine Medical Research of the Royal Canadian Navy. He was awarded a gold medal Starr, the Canadian Medical Association (1936) and Bailey Medal of the Royal College of Medicine in London (1939). He was a member of the London and the Royal Society of Canada and President of the Canadian Physiological Society.
