Born June 24, 1842 in Horse Cave (pc. Ohio), a family of devout farmers from Connecticut. Was the tenth of thirteen children in the family. Not received systematic education.

In April 1861 enlisted in the army, served as a staff officer and engineer-surveyor. In 1866 he settled in San Francisco. Soon decided to become a writer, met with B. Hart, C. Stoddard, and other writers. By 1868 he had already written a chronicle and essays in the magazine 'Californian' ( 'Californian'), and in December 1869 became a columnist 'News-Letteri' ( 'News-Letter'). December 25, 1871 Bierce married Mary Ellen Day (Day), and in 1872 the couple went to London for a honeymoon. Beers remained there until 1877. At that time the London society is experiencing a passion for the writers of the American West, and 'Bitter Bierce', as he was nicknamed, won some fame. In London, came three collections of his stories: Nuggets with sand namytye in California (Nuggets and Dust Panned out in Califirnia, 1872), devilish delights (The Fiend's Delight, 1872) and the Web from an empty skull (Cobwebs from an Empty Skull, 1874).

In 1877, Bierce returned to San Francisco, where he began to cooperate with the 'Overland Monthly' ( 'Overland Monthly') and published partly Dictionary of Satan (The Devil's Dictionary). His first book of stories about the military and civilians (Tales of Soldiers and Civilians, 1891, 1895), subsequently titled the midst of life (In the Midst of Life), was enthusiastically received by critics. Beers called the master of caustic humor, unexpected interchanges, terrible and beautiful contrasts. Then came Black Beetles in Amber (Black Beetles in Amber, . 1892), . Can this be? (Can Such Things Be?, . 1893), . Fantastic Fables (Fantastic Fables, . 1899), . Lexicon cynic (The Cynic's Word Book, . 1906), . later renamed Dictionary of Satan (1911), . - A collection of witty definitions, . The shadow on the dial (The Shadow on the Dial, . 1909) and Collected Works (Collected Works, . 1909-1912) - 12 volumes of prose and poetry,

Having survived the death of his wife and sons, asthma Beers became acutely aware of fatigue life. At the end of 1912, citing the order of business, he visited his daughter Helen, promising to write from Mexico. December 26, 1913, he wrote her a letter from Chihuahua, and more of it there was no news.
