BUT, Charles (Booth Charles)

(1840-1916), born March 30, 1840 in Liverpool, in a family of average means. In 1866, together with his brother, Alfred Booth, formed a company engaged in marine transportation between Europe and Brazil, later reorganized into 'shipping company Bout'. In 1873, Booth moved to London, where he began to study changes in the lives of the working class under the influence of social and industrial transformation in the 19. Three years later, developed a classification of the population of London on the criteria of employment and income. Term studies of living and working conditions of the population of London was the major 17-volume work The Life and work of the London population (Life and Labour of the People of London, 1889-1891, 1892-1897, 1902-1903).
In 1904 Booth was appointed privy councilor from 1905 to 1909 was a member of the Royal Commission dealing with the problems of the poor, in 1908 contributed to the enactment of the Pension Age. Member of the Royal Statistical Society, received honorary degrees from the universities of Cambridge, Liverpool and Oxford. Booth died in Uituike (Leicestershire) 23 November 1916.
