Born c.. 1478 in Maubeuge (now France). Perhaps student Gerard David. In 1502 became a member of the guild of artists in Antwerp. Around 1507 he entered the service of Philip of Burgundy, who was accompanied on a trip to Rome in 1508-1509. Then went to work for Philip and simultaneously received orders from the royal patrons of the House of Habsburg.
Gossaert interesting primarily as the founder romanizma in Flemish painting 16. He sought to learn the achievements of the Italian Renaissance, but it drew inspiration from the secondary masters such as Leonardo's Milanese followers, moreover, Gossaert been influenced by A. Durer. In his works, he turned to the Bible and ancient subjects, often depicted nude figures against a background of nature, which passed with a typical for the Netherlands art care and detail. Gossaert enjoyed great success as a portraitist: his characters are often endowed with monumental grandeur. The most typical works of the artist's paintings are Baptism, Neptune and Amphitrite (1516, Berlin, Bodemuzeum) and the diptych with a portrait of Jean Karondele (1517, Paris, Louvre). Died Gossaert in Middelburg between 1533 and 1536.
