Biography Edward Adelbert Doisy (Doisy Edward Adelbert)
(1893-1986) Award in 1943 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (jointly with H. Dam) for the discovery of vitamin K and the establishment of its role in blood coagulation. Born November 13, 1893 in Hume (pc. Illinois). He graduated from the University of Illinois (1914). In 1915-1917 he worked in the Medical School of Harvard University in 1920 and his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry. In 1919-1923 - member of the Department of Biochemistry, School of Medicine at the University of Dzh.Vashingtona in St. Louis (pc. Missouri), in 1923-1965 - Professor, Head of the Department of Biochemistry. The main work Doisy, described the structure of vitamins and hormones. He was in a crystalline form of female sex hormones, particularly oestradiol. In 1939, isolated from seeds of alfalfa and fish meal are two substances: vitamins K1 and K2, defined their structure, synthesize vitamin K1. Opened a number of bile acids, carried out their synthesis. Author of books Sex Hormones (Sex Hormones, 1936) and Sex and internal secretion (Sex and Internal Secretions, 1939). Doisy died in St. Louis on Oct. 23, 1986.
