Biography Carl Theodor Dreyer (Dreyer Carl Theodor)
(1889-1968)
Born February 3, 1889 in Copenhagen. After a not very successful courses in journalism in 1912, came to work in the studio 'Nordisk' - wrote captions, was an editor, writer. For his directorial debut, the film President (Praesidenten, 1920), wrote the script and made sketches of scenery. Carefully constructed composition of scenes and astute selection of specific actors (or lay tipazhnyh) distinguish this and all subsequent films Dreyer. The second film Dryer, Pages from the book of Satan (Blade af satans bog, 1921), was an expression of deep religiosity.

Years Dreier wrote versions of the script for the movie The Passion of Joan of Arc (La passion de Jeanne d'Arc, 1928). Placed in France with an international composition of actors and artists have been widely used slow close-ups and titrated dialogues, the film was a natural transition to sound cinema. However, after his first sound picture Vampire, . or the terrible adventure of David Gray (Vampyr, . 1932) a staunch opponent of commercial cinema, . uncompromising idealist Dreyer did not filmed almost 12 years, . and only the success of his unpretentious series of documentary films culminated in the signing of the contract to the shooting of the Day of wrath (Vredens dag, . 1942), . gave a terrible picture of the Puritan 'witch hunt' in Denmark, 17 in,

For half a century of work in film Dreyer made only 14 feature films. Last 20 years of his life he spent on the futile search for sponsors for the film about the life of Christ. In 1955 the film Word (Ordet, the same name drama K. Munch) received the 'Grand Prix' at the Venice Film Festival. In his last film, Gertrude (1964) director has demonstrated many of the techniques that made him famous. Dreyer died in Copenhagen 20 March 1968.
