Suppe, Franz (Suppe Franz)

Francesco Etsekele Ermenegildo Suppe-Demelli was born in the Dalmatian town of Spalato (Split) April 18, 1819. As early as age 15, has composed some church songs, and in 1835, moved with a widowed mother in Vienna, became a pupil of Austrian composer J. Zeyfrida, which in turn was a pupil of Mozart. In 1849, Suppe got the position of conductor at the Vienna 'Yozefshtedter-theater'. Over the next two decades, he wrote the music for 180 farce and vaudeville (all of them now forgotten, but spirited overture to Poet and peasant and songs on my Mandrake Austria from the play, which became the second national anthem). When due Offenbach operetta came into vogue, Suppe wrote a series of one-act operettas, among them - ten girls and no men (1862), Beautiful Galatea (1865) and Light Cavalry (1866). When in 1876 Johann Strauss did not accept the order for the operetta, Suppe recourse to the available libretto, composed Fatinitsu, whose success was surpassed only in the following product itself Suppe - Boccaccio (1879). Suppe died in Vienna May 21, 1895.
