Biography Jomo Kenyatta (Kenyatta Jomo)
(1894-1978), born near Nairobi in 1894. In 1928, Kenyatta, who belonged to the Kikuyu people of Kenya's largest, was the leader of the Kikuyu Central Association (CAC). After unsuccessful attempts to obtain satisfaction of the CAC in the UK went to the USSR, where for two years he studied at Moscow University. From 1935 to 1938 worked with anthropologist B. Malinowski at the London School of Economics. In 1938 it published a Face to Mount Kenya (Facing Mount Kenya), which explored the history and culture of the Kikuyu. Participated in organizing the 5 th Pan African Congress in 1945. After returning to Kenya in 1946, Kenyatta became the leader of the movement of the Kenya African National Union. The British accused him of secret leadership of the Mau Mau movement, and in 1952 he was arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison. In 1961, Kenyatta was released and became president of Kenya African National Union (KANU). He became prime minister of Kenya in June 1963, six months before independence, and president in December 1964. Kenyatta died in Mombasa on Aug. 22, 1978.
