Born June 1, 1780 in Burg, near Magdeburg in the family of official. In 1792 enlisted in the Prussian army cadet, in 1793 took part in the war with France. In 1801 he entered the military school in Berlin. After graduating from college he was appointed adjutant to Prince August of Prussia, together with him was captured by the French in the War 1806-1807.
