Biography Oskar Kokoschka (Kokoschka Oskar)
(1886-1980)
Born in PцІchlarn March 1, 1886, in 1904-1909 he studied at the Art and Industrial School in Vienna. Before the First World War, lived mostly in Berlin and Vienna, had been in Switzerland, Paris and Munich. In 1908 he took part in the activities of the first of the Berlin Secession. During the war, was at the front. In 1920-1924 Kokoschka taught at the Art Academy in Dresden. Then he traveled in Europe and the Middle East, from time to time lived in Paris, Vienna, Prague and London. Kokoschka died in Montreux (Switzerland), February 22, 1980.
In the works of Kokoschka tracked changes in the style and interests. Before World War II, he specialized in portraits, which are remarkable depth of penetration into the inner life of a model. Style artists of this period is characterized by the fine interpretation of the linear forms, and freedom from descriptive realism (Portrait of Dr. Forel, Berlin, private collection). Gradually, however, in his manner became more interested in techniques of painting (Self-portrait, New York, Museum of Modern Art), but retain a subtle perception of the model. In 1920 Kokoschka was one of the most gifted German Expressionists. During this period he turned to the landscape, which became his favorite genre. Introvert character of his early works, now lost jobs, . which drew impetus from the outside, they used bold plastic natural forms, . fashioned paste-like brush strokes in bright colors (Elbe near Dresden, . Detroit, . Art Institute, . and the port of Marseilles, . St. Louis, . Municipal Museum of Art),
. During the Second World War in the works of Kokoschka lull, but then came the work was fully expressivity and much more subtle in color and pattern (Mount Matterhorn, Zurich, a collection of H. Lyutyens). In 1956 were published selected literary works created by the artist in 1907-1955.
