Biography Charles Augustus Lindbergh (Lindbergh Charles Augustus)
(1902-1974)
Born Feb. 4, 1902 in Detroit (pc. Michigan). He received elementary education in Little Falls (pc. Minnesota), in 1920-1922 he studied at the University of Wisconsin. In 1924 the school became a cadet in the U.S. Air Reserve Brooks Field (pc. Texas), served as pilot of the military postal service. He took part in the fight for a prize of 25 000 dollars designated for the first successful transatlantic flight. Designed by J. Hall ordered his plane "Spirit of St. Louis' was built on the company 'Ryan' in San Diego (pc. California). May 10, 1927 Lindbergh flew from San Diego to New York with intermediate landing in St. Louis; full flight time was 21 h 45 min. May 20 Lindbergh was launched from the airfield Roosevelt Field in New York and after 33 hours 30 minutes landed at Le Bourget airport near Paris.
In 1936 at the invitation of G. Hering Lindberg visited the German aviation center. While visiting Germany in 1938 the German government submitted it to the medal. This fact, as well as public calls for Lindberg to neutrality, with which he made in 1940 on his return to America, brought sharp criticism from President Roosevelt. After the war, Lindbergh was a member of the delegation went to Germany to study the achievements of this country in aircraft. In 1954 was promoted to Brigadier General.

Lindberg - author of several books: We (We, 1927), Missions and the life (Of Flight and Life, 1948), Spirit of St. Louis (The Spirit of St. Louis, 1953 - an autobiography, for which he received the Pulitzer Prize), Military Diaries (Wartime Journals, 1970). He was awarded the Medal of Congress and the Cross of Merit. Lindbergh died in Kipahulu on Maui (Hawaii) 26 August 1974.
