Biography Patrice Emery Lumumba (Lumumba Patrice Emery)
(1925-1961) Born July 2, 1925 in Onalua (Belgian Congo). He was educated in schools in the Belgian Congo. Joined the postal clerk in Stanleyville. He has performed with numerous articles in the Congolese press. He was jailed for embezzlement. Leaving from prison, he founded the Congolese National Movement. In 1959 was again behind bars for inciting riots. Attended a conference in Brussels in 1960, which discussed the issue of independence of the Congo. When the Republic of the Congo gained its independence, Lumumba became prime minister and Joseph Kasavubu - the post of head of state. Soon the army mutiny broke out, Katanga province seceded. In July 1960, Lumumba called for the introduction of the Congo troops, but did not get UN backing. Turned for help to the USSR. Dispatched army troops to the province of Kasai for the preparation of the invasion of Katanga. September 5, 1960 was suspended from his duties, placed under house arrest, subsequently transferred to a military camp near Tishvil Leopoldville (now Kinshasa), and finally sent to a remote area of Katanga. It was reported that Lumumba had escaped and was killed by villagers. Later reports indicate that Lumumba was killed by authorities in Katanga January 17, 1961.
