Biography MONTES Ismael (Montes Ismael)
1861-1933) Born in La Paz in 1861. He was elected to Congress from the Liberal Party, after the Liberals came to power in 1899 became defense minister in the government of President Josц? Manuel Pando. Elected president in 1904 and 1913. During the reign of Montes, a series of liberal reforms, . resolved long-standing border dispute between Bolivia and Chile, . built a railroad from Oruro to Viachi and from La Paz to Arica, . greatly expanded network of public schools, . enacted laws on civil marriage and freedom of conscience, . In 1911, Montes was appointed ambassador to England, in 1917 in France. In 1928 he returned home and led the Liberal Party. Montes died in La Paz on November 18, 1933.
