Biography MOHAMMED V
(1909-1961) (tazhe Sidi Mohammed bin Yusuf) Born in Fez, August 10, 1909. In 1927 he inherited the throne. After three years of regency was the Sultan. With only nominal power, he nonetheless has organized a movement for national liberation, and in 1953 the French had to send him into exile in Madagascar, but in 1955 they allowed him to return to the country. In 1956, Morocco gained independence. In 1957, Mohammed refused the traditional title of Sultan and became known as King Mohammed V, appointing the eldest son Crown Prince Mohammad Hassan. This meant a departure from tradition, as well as support for Moroccan nationalism, the idea of democratic elections and other changes, including the emancipation of women. Mohammed died in Rabat on 26 February 1961. He was succeeded by son - Hassan II.
