Biography ROBINSON, Mary (Robinson Mary)

Born May 21, 1944 in County Mayo in western Ireland. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree and Bachelor of Law at Trinity College, Dublin (1967). In 1969 was elected to the Senate of the Irish Labor Party.
In the Senate Robinson stood for reform in family life, the right to divorce, abortion, and for the rights of homeless and homosexuals. In 1985, out of the Irish Labor Party's support for the Labor Party after the Anglo-Irish agreement in which Ireland was assigned to a purely advisory role in the government of Northern Ireland. In its actions, Robinson guided by the Constitution: the agreement was signed by the Prime Ministers of Ireland and the UK without consultation with severoirlandtsami. Nevertheless, the Labor Party put forward its candidate for president, who has long served as 'preserve' the ruling party Fianna Fц?il ( 'Soldiers of fate'). In November 1990, Robinson was elected President of Ireland.

Robinson paid particular attention to the visits to the Irish diaspora communities in Britain and the U.S.. In May 1993, met with Queen Elizabeth II. A few weeks later visited the ethnically mixed groups in West Belfast in Northern Ireland, where she met with the leader of Sinn Fein ( 'Ourselves') Dzh.Adamsom.

In 1997, having received the appointment of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN, Robinson resigned from his post as president for several months before the end of term.
