Biography Rouget de Lisle Claude Joseph
(1760-1836)
Born May 18, 1760 in Lons-le Saunier (Department of Jura). He was educated at the School of Military Engineers in Mц?ziц?res and rose to the rank of Major in 1796, but later resigned, and dragged out a miserable existence, earning a livelihood correspondence notes.
The greatest achievement of Rouget de Lisle was writing words and music Marseillaise (La Marseillaise) night of 25 to 26 April 1792, the house of Strasbourg Mayor. Named Warsong Army of the Rhine, the Marseillaise was soon marching revolutionary detachments from Marseille, and then - the most popular song of the French Revolution. Rouget de Lisle, spent some time in prison, was freed after the death of Robespierre, and in 1794 composed a song 9 Thermidor (Le chant du 9 Thermidor). In 1825 he published a collection of Fifty French songs (Cinquante chants franais). Died Rouget de Lisle in complete oblivion in Choisy le Roi (now the Department of Val de Marne) on 27 June 1836.
