Biography TUDJMAN Franjo (Tudjman Franjo)
(1922-1999)
Born in Zagora (Croatia), May 14, 1922. During the Second World War, joined the Communist Party and the Yugoslav anti-fascist guerrilla army. Resigned from the armed forces in 1961 with the rank of army general, became director of the Zagreb Institute of History of the labor movement. He defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Zagreb in 1965. Twice been imprisoned on charges of supporting nationalism, the first time in 1972, the second time in 1981. He was deprived of all military awards. With the support of Croatian emigrants Tudjman founded the Croatian Democratic Community Party, which won the 1990 elections and remained the ruling until the end of 1997. Tudjman was elected by parliament as president of Croatia in 1990 and was re-elected in direct elections in 1992. Despite poor health, was re-elected for a third term in June 1997.
Armed forces, formed Tudjman, in 1991, defeated the Yugoslav army, after which it was formed Independent State of Croatia. In 1995, the Croatians managed to defeat the rebels in the formation of mostly populated by Serbs Serbian Krajina. In 1993, Tudjman ordered the invasion of the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina to integrate Herzegovina, populated mostly by Croats in Croatia as a republic of Herceg-Bosna. In 1995, together with Serbia and Bosnia, has signed a peace agreement in Dayton (pc. Ohio), which halted fighting in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1999, Tudjman had been hospitalized with a diagnosis of stomach cancer. A week later, the Supreme Court of Croatia has announced his "temporary disability" and handed the powers of the Parliament Speaker Vlatko Pavletic for two months. Tudjman died in Zagreb on December 10, 1999.
