Biography Charles Proteus Steinmetz (Steinmetz Charles Proteus)
(1865-1923)
Born April 9, 1865 in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland). He studied at the University of Breslau, he graduated from the Technische Hochschule in Zurich. In 1889 he emigrated to the U.S.. He worked in the electrical engineering firm in Yonkers (pc. New York). Under the influence of the owner of the firm R. Aykemeyera interested in electrical engineering. He organized a laboratory, where he spent most of his research. First of all, Steinmetz took up the definition of power losses in magnetic materials used in electrical equipment, and has the empirical formula for calculating the hysteresis losses (1890-1892). This has to take into account the power losses in the calculation of transformers, motors, alternators and other devices. In 1892, Steinmetz made two reports on this topic at the conference at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The work was immediately recognized, and the calculated ratios of hysteresis losses were included in the handbooks on electrical.
The second important achievement Steinmetz - Develop a method for calculating the AC circuit in 1893. The method quickly found a practical application, to which many have contributed to numerous lectures on this topic, read Steinmetz, and his book Mathematics for Engineers (Engineering Mathematics, 1910).

In 1893 the company entered into a corporation Aykemeyera 'General Electric', Steinmetz was a place where an engineer. Here he appeared more opportunities for research work and the introduction of inventions. Initially, he participated in the creation of powerful generators for a new hydropower plant at Niagara Falls, offering many improvements. Then, taking up the study of short-term changes in electrical circuits, investigate the nature of lightning and suggested a way to protect power lines. In addition, Steinmetz was engaged in design and calculation of lighting devices and large electric machines. Over time, took over as technical manager of the company 'General Electric'. In 1901, he was elected president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. In 1902 he was appointed Professor of Electrical Engineering Union College. Died Steinmetz in Schenectady (pc. New York City) October 26, 1923.
