Since 1848, he taught mathematics at the College de France, from 1870 - Professor Ecole Normale Supц?rieure and the Sorbonne. Member of the Paris Academy of Sciences since 1856, Royal Society of London - from 1873. Works Hermite devoted to the theory of numbers, algebra and theory of elliptic functions. He showed how to reduce the general algebraic equation of fifth degree to a form solvable in elliptic modular functions. The class of orthogonal polynomials (Hermite polynomials), created the theory of invariants (together with Cayley and Silverstom). He proved the transcendence of e (1873) and later a German mathematician F. Lindemann proved the method similar to the Hermite, the transcendence of p. Known work of Hermite on solving the equation of the fifth degree (Sur la rsolution de l `quatia du cinquime degr, 1858). Died Hermit in Paris on January 14 1901.S
