Biography Henrietta Leavitt
In the course of its work in the Harvard College Observatory Levitt performed precise calibration of photographic stellar magnitudes of 47 stars, which were attributed to the measurement of all the other stars. Levitt has opened more than 1500 variable stars in our galaxy close to the Magellanic Clouds and created a catalog of these objects. Exploring the resulting directory, Levitt found that the Cepheid variable stars change their brightness more slowly than they are brighter. This property of the Cepheids used in the present time to calibrate the distance scale of the universe.
