Biography Otto Wels (Wels)
Wels, Otto (Wels), (1873-1939), politician of the Weimar Republic, the Social Democrat. Born September 15, 1873 in Berlin. In 1931 he was a member of the Central Committee of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). Member of the Reichstag in 1912 - 18 and 1920-33. In 1931-33 Wels was the chairman of SPD. March 23, 1933 he delivered a speech in the Reichstag, in which protested on behalf of his party in exchange for Hitler's emergency powers. Shortly thereafter, Wels was forced to leave Germany, he first settled in Prague, and in 1938 moved to Paris where he continued to lead the SPD in exile. He died in Paris on September 16, 1939.
