Biography SCHILLING Paul L.
Paul L. Schilling was born in Revel (now called Tallinn) in the family of an officer of the Russian army in 1786.

He graduated from the Cadet Corps and served in the General Staff. Then Paul L. served in the Russian Embassy in Munich. During the War of 1812, Schilling had distinguished themselves in battle.

After the war, Paul L. Schilling served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He studied lithography and established Russia's first civilian lithograph for the printing of maps.

Hobbies Schilling - Oriental - made his name very well-known. On a trip to Eastern Siberia Paul L. assembled a huge collection of Tibetan and Mongolian literary monuments in 1828 he was elected a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in the direction of literature and antiquities of the East.

But Schilling walked into history through his work in the field of electricity. Researching ways to send signals by electricity, he came to the idea to apply for this electromagnetic device.

Long-term experiments led him to create in 1832, a keyboard telegraph indicator performed on the basis of galvanometer needle.

Good knowledge of languages and systems of encryption allowed Paul Lvovich Schilling create a special purpose wire 6-digit code. This code and determine the number of switches inidikatorov in his telegraph system (six pieces).

Later, Schilling created and single-needle telegraph wire with the binary coding system of signals.

Successful tests of the telegraph Schilling allowed to build in 1836 in St. Petersburg official line of telegraph between the buildings of the Admiralty.

In 1837, Schilling has developed a draft underwater electromagnetic telegraph line between Krontadtom and Peterhof.

In 1837, Paul L. Schilling died.
