Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel (p. 1928), a Jewish novelist, journalist and teacher.

Born September 30, 1928 in Siget (Romania). Religious education. In 1944 the Jews of his town were deported to various concentration camps, where most of them perished. Wiesel escaped and lived first in Paris, where in 1948-1951 he studied at the Sorbonne, and in 1956 moved to New York. In 1963 became an American citizen. In 1983, his novels testament murdered Jewish poet (Le testament d'un poц?te Juif assassinц?, 1980) and Words outsiders (Paroles d'etrangers, 1982) were awarded the International Literary Prize for peacemaking. In 1985, Wiesel was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. In 1986 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

In late 1950 Wiesel turned to literature, works of art, he also wrote in French. Book Night (La Nuit, 1958) told of his experiences in Auschwitz, about the inhumanity of the death. In his book The Gate of the forest (Les Portes de la FцЄret, 1966) showing the destruction of the Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary, the senselessness of these atrocities and the impossibility of religious thinking of such events.
