Biography Will Siebert Cather
Cather, Will Siebert (Cather, Willa Sibert) (1873-1947), American writer. Born Dec. 7, 1873 in Back Creek Valley (now Gore ea. Virginia). In 1895 she graduated from the University of Nebraska, from 1895 to 1912 worked in New York magazine 'Maklyurs Magazine'. Her first book, poetry collection "The April Twilight" (April Twilights, 1903), went unnoticed. After it released a compilation of short stories "The Enchanted Garden" (The Troll Garden, 1905), most famous for "The Case of Paul" (Paul's Case), which first declared a constant theme in Cather conflict of the artist with their environment. In 1912 she released her first novel, "Bridge of Alexander" (Alexander's Bridge). Wide recognition has brought the book "The Pioneers!" (O Pioneers!, 1913), where Cather depicts the image of women admitted their feelings for the love of the land. In the novel "My Antonia" (My Antonia, 1918) the heroine realizes creative aspirations, creating a house full of happy children. Cather book about the First World War "One of our" (One of Ours) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1922. In the novel "fallen woman" (A Lost Lady, 1923) shows the fate of the charming heroine, which failed to confront the hostile circumstances. In "House of professors" (The Professor's House, 1925) is obvious resistance to change, identification of the past with a genuine and present with an imaginary, illusory. The novel "My mortal enemy" (My Mortal Enemy, . 1926) opened a kind of 'Catholic trilogy' Cather, . which included the novels "Death Comes for the Archbishop" (Death Comes for the Archbishop, . 1927), . tells the story of a French missionary in the south-western United States, . and "Shadows on the Rock" (Shadows on the Rock; Prize 'Femina American', . 1931), . action which occurs in 17,
. Quebec. Cather also belong to "Unobtrusive fate" (Obscure Destinies, 1932), "Lucy Gayheart" (Lucy Gayheart, 1935), a collection of essays, "Only after forty" (Not Under Forty, 1936), "Sapphira and the slave" (Sapphira and Slave Girl , 1940). In 1938 Cather was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Cather died in New York on April 24, 1947.
