Barshay Rudolf B.

Barshay, Rudolf Borisovich (p. 1924), Russian viola player and conductor. Born in the village Labinskaya Krasnodar Territory on Sept. 28, 1924 into an artistic family. He studied at the Special Music School at the Leningrad Conservatory (class of violin, then viola), in 1944-1948 - at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of Viola V. Borisov, he is a postgraduate. His active solo concert career began after 1949, when he won 2 nd place at the International Festival of Democratic Youth and Students in Budapest. Barshay served as ensemble, including Sviatoslav Richter, DF Oistrakh, was a member of the trio with L. B. Kogan and Rostropovich. In his extensive repertoire consisting of both its own transcription, including the processing of Sonata for Viola A. Vivaldi Concerto for Viola in with a string orchestra and organ. In 1956 he led them organized by the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. C Moscow Chamber Orchestra Barshay first performed a series of works by Soviet composers (Fourteenth Symphony of Dmitry Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony for chamber orchestra and harpsichord MS Weinberg, Music for chamber orchestra GV Sviridov). Musician made a number of transcriptions for chamber orchestra (including the suite from the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" by Prokofiev, "Art of Fugue" by JS Bach). Since 1967 Barshay acts as a symphony conductor (debuted with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra). In 1976 he emigrated to Israel where he headed the Israeli Chamber Orchestra. Worked in London, Munich. From 1982-1988 was chief conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Since the 1990's led by the Canadian Symphony Orchestra. Lives in Switzerland.
