McHugh, Ian

McHugh, Ian (McEwan, Ian) (p. 1948), English novelist and playwright. Born June 21, 1948 in Oldershote (England). He graduated with honors University of Sussex (BA, 1970), then studied with Malcolm Bradbury, the renowned writer and professor of the University of East Anglia, where in 1971 received a Master of Arts. Several dubious reputation has gained him the first two collections of short stories - "First love, last rites" (First Love, Last Rites, 1975) and "There, in bed" (In Between the Sheets, 1978). In both books are played sexual anomalies, intrusive nightmares, a situation from the category of 'black' humor and acting strange, grotesque characters. Collection "First love, last rites, was in 1976 literary prize Somerset Maugham.

In McHugh's first novel "The cement garden" (The Cement Garden, 1978) traced the moral degradation of children from one family, lost their parents. Critics have equated this to the famous novel "Lord of the Flies" (Lord of the Flies, 1954) by William Golding. In contrast to the eccentric characters of the previous works of the writer's characters in the book "Consolation commuters" (The Comfort of Strangers, 1981) - a respectable British pair, located on holiday in Venice. Appalling in the novel are not heroes, and events. The couple find themselves embroiled in a web of nightmarish perversion, culminating in a truly disgusting. Reviewers differed in their assessments of the book. In the third novel McHugh, "Child in Time" (The Child in Time, 1987) is something that all parents dread - a child disappears, and the author carefully examines how this affects the relationship between the father and mother. The book won the 1987 Award 'Whitbread', awarded for the best novel of the year.

In the "innocent" (The Innocent, 1990) the writer refers to the espionage activities of a bygone era. Venue is Berlin 1950 - the height of the Cold War. The plot - the joint efforts of the United States and Britain to seize one of the communication systems of Russian. The narration in the novel "Black Dogs" (Black Dogs, 1992) conducted on behalf of the person trying to reconstruct the dramatic events that occurred in his family.

The plot of the novel "To sustain a strong love" (Enduring Love, 1998) serves as a picnic, the author converted into a nightmare. "Amsterdam" (Amsterdam, 1998) - a modern history 'with morality', informative and witty, thanks to which McHugh became the winner of the Booker Prize. His last novel is called "Payment" (An Atonement).

McHugh has written two children's books - "White Rose" (Rose Blanche, 1985) and "Dreamer" (The Daydreamer, 1994).

He also owns a number of screenplays, the most significant of which - "Lunch farmer" (The Ploughman's Lunch, 1983) - based on his own theatrical. How best screenplay in 1983 won the newspaper 'Evening Standard'.

He is the author of several telestsenariev, as well as the text of Michael Berkeley's oratorio "Or the human race will perish?" (Or Shall We Die: An Oratorio).
