. Born in New York on February 18, 1848 in a family of large-scale entrepreneur Charles L. Tiffany, founded (1837) firm that took the lead in the American jewelry industry and trade
. In 1866, he worked in the studio of J. Innes, and then - in Paris D. Bailly (1868). In his youth, traveled a lot - especially in North Africa and Spain. Returning to the U.S. in the early 1870's, painted landscapes and genre scenes in the spirit of Orientalism. Collect Far Eastern and Islamic utensils and furniture. In 1877, organized (together with J. La Farge, and others) American art associations to promote modern, as opposed to academicism. Been heavily influenced by English 'movement arts and crafts'.

Soon the entire focus its interests in the decorative design (art glass). In 1878 he opened his own glass factory in Queens (a suburb of New York). Particular success accompanied brand 'Favril' (specific reagents stained glass, etched or polished to a shine, and in its structure were also patterns in the form of reliefs and metal clad walls, enamel and semiprecious stones).
