Born in Moscow in the family iconographer. In 1878-1882 he. studied at the Academy of Arts. Under the influence of D. I. Grimm decided to devote himself to the study of Russian architecture. During 1883-1887 he. made several trips to Russia, measurements, drawing, photographing monuments of architecture, continued to study and subsequently, in connection with restoration work. Repeatedly traveled abroad - to France, Italy, Turkey, Germany etc.. in connection with research and design work. In 1885 - academician, in 1902 - Professor. One of the initiators of the case of monuments. Many designed and built in the spirit of Russian and the neo-Russian style. After the revolution, was suspended from teaching. Died in Khvalynskoye.
An outstanding researcher of Russian architecture, architect, artist, theorist, teacher and restorer.
Major works: Alexander's passage in Kazan (from H. I. Active now), a monument-tomb of Russian soldiers at San Stefano (Turkey), churches in the estate of M. K. Tenisheva near Smolensk, in der.
