As a child, Basil began to perceive the brightness of the color. Charcoal and chalk on the walls of the hut, tree trunks, fences. He was very fond of reading, tinkering, but the fascination with painting prevailed over all. Basil goes to the art room and in the first twelve years, wrote oil paints a portrait of his uncle. His first teachers were the artists Vladimir Yakovenko Victor Savin, who, as recognized by the Vasily Ivanovich, like stars, lightning lit up his path to the heights of art.

In 1938, VI. Zabashta arrives in Kharkiv Art College, which was his first temple of art. His instructors were to. Gripich, A. Golovashov (student in. Serov), B. Kasiyan. Even as a freshman, Basil became the winner of students' creative work. In the picture-sketch "Attempted rural correspondent" warm light candles struggled with the cold moonlight, claimed the life of the candle, the moon - death.

At the beginning of the second year of college in 1939, VI. Zabashta was drafted into the Red Army and as a radio operator sent to the war with Finland. First his battle proved to be fatal. Seriously wounded, Basil spent many months in hospitals.

He returned home in May 1941. But the Great Patriotic War and VI. Zabashta he volunteered for the front. He fought in the South-West (1941-1942), Bryansk (1943) and I Ukrainian (1944) front. However, in February 1943 he again returned to active duty. Commander of the armored vehicles fought the 7 th Guards separate motorcycle battalion, consisting of 10 Guards Tank Ural (later Ural-Lvov) Volunteer Corps 4 Panzer Army. Passed Orel-Kursk arc and all the hell of war to Berlin and Prague.
Here are some episodes of his military history. July 21, 1944 Guard Petty Officer Basil Zabashta in a group conducted reconnaissance of the enemy in the area of clay. Under heavy small-arms fire, he was among the first made his way to a German firing point and several grenades destroyed it. In the bunker, he took a staff officer with a portfolio of important documents.

. When the job he threw grenades and set fire to two armored infantry from the enemy, destroyed three enemy patrol, two cut telephone lines of the enemy. After pushing the group came under machine-gun fire of the enemy. VI. Zabashta ruled the battlefield seriously wounded comrade, and with two more soldiers continued to return fire by the Nazis, covering the retreat of their group.

For valor and courage on the front, VI. Zabashta is rewarded with Glory II and III degree (1944), many medals.

This former prisoners of Stalin's camps biologist Nicholas Charlemagne, Gregory Kolyada bibliographer, a famous art critic Stepan Taranushenko. He has been active in the Society for Protection of Monuments of History and Culture (1978-1990).
