Biography Kossuth Lajos (Lajos Kossuth)
19.IX.1802 - 20.III.1894
A brilliant lawyer, orator and journalist, Lajos Kossuth led the revolt of Hungary for independence from Austria in 1848.
Kossuth was born September 19, 1802 in a family of impoverished nobles. For many years he fought for the independence of Hungary by Austria at the time appraised as the eastern province of the empire. His liberal publications, most of which were written as letters to avoid censorship, outraged the Austrian Habsburg dynasty. In 1837, the Royal Government arrested Kossuth. He was accused of treason and imprisoned.
Massive protests forced the authorities to go to his release, and in 1840 he was released. Kossuth became the leader of the Liberals and a member of the Hungarian Parliament. His merciless exposure of the feudal system led to the abolition of serfdom in Hungary.
In March 1848, inspired by the revolution in France, Kossuth in Hungary, called for a parliamentary government. When it became clear that Austria is trying to force to stop the liberation movement, Kossuth attempted to rally the Hungarians, significantly enhancing the liberation army. April 14, 1849, he declared Hungary independent of Austria and, in essence, became its dictator. But his haste and arrogance to scare away other leaders. His troops were defeated, and in the same year he was forced to flee to Turkey.
He visited the United States, where he spoke eloquently and with feeling about the independence of Hungary. In 1852 he went to England and lived there for about 17 years. Kossuth died March 20, 1894 in Turin (Italy).
