Criticism
... In his portraits, as in landscapes, Mertslin does nothing for the sake of picturesqueness samodavleyuschey. Call of life, and not urge the clean Crafts hear the rhythmic pulsation of painting his pictures. This is a great master of natural temperament and solid artistic culture. He soon realized the inadequacy of only one of the notorious "insides", which tend to boast some very talented artists. Sooner found serious social note to his art, reaching out to people. His art itself found its way to the viewer, and it does not require formal approval or recognition.
