in Russian, Pyotr Petrovich, engineer, scientist (1783 - 1838). He had been sent by Napoleon I, at the request of Alexander I, along with three other mathematicians, from Paris to St. Petersburg as the first pupil of the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, for the formation of our Institute of Railway Engineers. There he read mathematics and was made director of the Institute. In 1830 he returned to his homeland.
