Betlingk Otto N.

Born May 30, 1815, Mr.. in St. Petersburg in the prosperous merchant family, his ancestors moved to Russia from Lubeck in the beginning of the XVIII century. Listened to lectures in universities: St. Petersburg, Berlin and Bonn, worked under the guidance of Bonn, August Wilhelm Schlegel and Lassen. In 1842, Mr.. Betlingk was invited by an associate of the Academy of Sciences, in 1856. was elected to the ordinary academics. Back in the forties Betlingk conceived his main work - a complete dictionary of the Sanskrit language. This work was brilliantly executed them, in collaboration with Ruud. Roth (a professor at Tц?bingen); their "Sanskrit-Worterbuch" published by the Academy of Sciences (7 vols., St. Petersburg., 1852 - 75). This dictionary is created in the era indianistike; in any language lexical material is not subjected to such a strictly scientific process, as in the Sanskrit work Betlingka and Rota. Even before the end of the dictionary Betlingk moved to Germany. He died in Leipzig on March 19 (April 1) 1904. Shortly after the dictionary Betlingk subjected all the material reduced processing and issued a "Sanskrit-Worterbuch in kurzerer Fassung" (St. Petersburg, 1879 - 89). Betlingk issued as an exemplary "Sanskrit-Chrestomathie" (2 nd ed., St. Petersburg., 1877) and the collection of samples gnomic poetry "Indische Spruche" (2 vols., 2 nd ed., St. Petersburg., 1870 - 73, with the German translation). It is important also made the publication of texts and translations of some exemplary works of Sanskrit literature as graceful as well as scientific: "Abhijnanacakuntala" Kalidasa (Bonn, 1842, with German translation), "Mrk` k `hatika, d. i. das irdene Wagelchen "(St. Petersburg, 1877)," Panini's Grammatik "(1 st ed., Bonn, 1842, 2 ed., Lpts., 1887)," Dandin's Poetik "(Leipzig, 1890) and much more. Arthur Betlingk, nephew of preceding, born 19 (31) May 1849. in St. Petersburg, is a professor of history at Jena, he wrote: "Napoleon Bonaparte, siene Jugendgeschichte und sien Emporkommen" (t. 1 - 2, Jena, 1878 - 80) and drama: "Konig Konrad" (1881) and "Franz von Sickingen" (1881).
