Biography Brosset (Brosset, Marie-Fö?licitö? or Marius Ivanovich)
Born in Paris 1802. Son of poorer parents, he was a child destined to a religious calling, but on leaving the seminary refused to take holy orders and decided to take Oriental philology. The leaders of it were Abel Remusat, St. Maarten, ellenist Gaza and other. After 5 years of studying Chinese language and literature, Brosse, on the advice of Saint-Martin, appealed to the Georgian and Armenian literature. These literature attracted his attention by the fact that they were at that time were completely untouched by European scientists. Only the study of the Georgian language was the beginning of labor. Martin and others. Shortly before that in Paris, was based Asia Society, and is willing to print the work of Brosset in the above literatures. From 1827 to 1836 were published almost daily in the pages of publications of this society articles and treatises Brosse of Georgian and Armenian literature. Asia Society was published and his extensive essay "Chronique georgienne". Being engaged in Armenian and Georgian languages, Brosse felt the need to study languages: Persian and Russian, but as the first required a thorough familiarity with the Arabic language, he managed to learn only the language of Russian. Proceedings Brosse attracted attention not only of French scientists of the time, but the government of Charles X, who, on presentation of Sylvestre de Sacy, had suggested to send Brosse in Georgia and Armenia for Archaeological Research. The July revolution enabled the implementation of this incident Brosse. In 1835, Mr.. Russian Minister, Count SS. Uvarov, wanting to fill up deficiencies in the eastern part of philology in our academy, turned for advice to foreign scientists, and among other things, on the recommendation of Sylvestre de Sacy, stopped at Brosse. The latter, after a 6-month contest, December 2, 1836, Mr.. was elected to the vacant academic department of the Georgian and Armenian literature. Settled this year in St. Petersburg, . Brosse more activity was to engage in favorite subjects, and never ceased to publish various articles in the papers and memoirs of the Academy of Sciences, . based primarily on new data, . they did find in the St. Petersburg archives and libraries, or obtained during the archaeological travels in the Caucasus and Transcaucasian edge,
. The most extensive research result has been a journey in 1847 - 48 years. In addition, Brosse since 1842 was a librarian at the Imperial Public Library, and from 1851. keeper of Oriental Numismatic cabinet Hermitage. Brosse died Aug. 22, 1880. Through his writings, the world got acquainted with the history of a region, hitherto unknown, and therefore rightly considered the founder of Brosset Georgian and Armenian history and archeology. The number issued to them more or less extensive writings extends to 237 (cm. complete list of volume XXVI "Bull." Academy of Sciences). Here we mention only the most important of them: 1) "Description geographique de la Georgie par Wakhoucht" (St. Petersburg, . 1842) - Georgia's geographical description of Prince Vakhushti, . equipped with a translation and commentary, 2) an extensive collection, . embracing more than 3800 printed pages, . Georgian chroniclers, and 3) a similar collection of historians and chroniclers of Armenia, 4) correspondence with Russia's Georgian kings sovereigns, 5) a study on the Georgian and Armenian chronology, 6) description of the ruins of Ani, . principal city of Armenia under the rule of the dynasty Bagratid ( "Ruines d'Ani aux X et XI S.", . 2 vols, . 1860 - 61 years), 7) a description of the archaeological trip to Georgia and Armenia ( "Rapport sur un voyage arheologique dans la Georgie et dans l'Armenie", . Petersburg., . 1849 - 51) and others,
