Barthold Frц?dц?ric (Bartholdi Frdric Auguste)

(1834-1904), his most famous work - the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.
Bartholdi was born on April 2, 1834 in Colmar (Alsace). He studied architecture in Colmar and Paris. In Paris he also studied painting under Ary Scheffer and Jean-Francois at Suat.

Interests Bartholdy lay mainly in the sphere of monumental art. It really helped Bartholdi received his architectural education, his knowledge enabled him to successfully cope with the difficult problems of design and use of materials.

Statue of Liberty, the full name is Liberty, the light of the world, was established at the initiative of the means of Bartholdi, refined by him in France and the U.S.. This gigantic statue, conceived as a monument in honor of the conclusion of the Franco-American alliance of 1778, was knocked down by hand on a wooden model of the three hundred large copper plates and has a steel frame inside. She exhibited in Paris in 1884, then was dismantled and moved to America, where on Oct. 28, 1886 it held its grand opening.

Another grandiose monument, created by Bartholdi - Lion of Belfort (1888). It is carved from red sandstone cliffs towering over the town of Belfort. This huge statue was erected in memory of the heroic defense of the city during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870.

Among other activities, Bartholdi - the sculptural group of the Marquis de Lafayette and George Washington (1873), established on an area of the United States in Paris, and a monument to the Marquis de Lafayette, adorn Union Square in New York.
