Biography Bossuet, Jacques Bц?nigne (Bossuet Jacques Bnigne)
(1627-1704)
Born September 27, 1627 in Dijon. He graduated from a Jesuit school in his hometown, and then, at age 15, went to Paris to study philosophy and theology in the Collegium Navarra (Collge de Navarre). In 1652 received his doctorate in theology. In 1661 Louis XIV appointed him as a preacher in the Chapelle Royale, in this post Bossuet said some of his best known sermons and funeral orations. In 1671 he was entrusted with the upbringing Dauphin. In 1681 he became bishop of Meaux, devoting the rest of life protecting the Catholic religion. Bossuet died in Paris on April 12, 1704.
Bossuet was not only one of the most eloquent preachers of all time, but also an outstanding historian and defender of the purity of Catholic doctrine and the spiritual leader of the French church in recent decades, 17. Among his most famous funeral orations belong speech commemorating the French Henrietta, Henrietta of England, Louis of Bourbon and Prince de Conde. His discourse on universal history (Discours sur l'histoire universelle), . written as a manual for the Dauphin, . were, . for all their theological orientation, . one of the first historical studies, . an analysis of the causes of historical events and a philosophy of history,

Speaking advocate dogmatic rigor, Bossuet condemned the rationalistic interpretation of the SW. Scriptures R. Simon and quietism Fenelon. He sought to reunite Protestants with the Catholics, and, possibly, his work History of Protestant Churches (Histoire des variations des glises protestants, 1688) should be considered essential in the work of the preacher. Bossuet was one of the greatest French prose. His eloquence, exquisite, style is often poetic and picturesque, marked by vivid imagery and animate deep religious feeling. In 1671 he was elected a member of the French Academy.
