At the age of fifteen he entered the University of North Carolina with the intent to study law. After graduation in 1920, Wolfe decided to become a playwright, and entered Harvard University, mainly in order to engage in a well-known seminar on drama, directed by Professor Dzh.P.Beyker ( 'Studio 47'). Three years later he went to New York with the play Welcome to our city (Welcome to Our City) and Mannerhaus (Mannerhouse), but did not find producers willing to put these unusual works with many actors and unwieldy scenes. To have time for writing, Wolfe taught English literature at New York University. At the university he worked from February 1924 to January 1930, from time to time naezzhaya in Europe. In 1925 he fell in love with Alina Bernstein. She led him to complete an autobiographical novel, which was published in 1929 under the title Look at his house, an angel (Look Homeward, Angel). Compose a book of unwieldy manuscript Wolfe helped M. Perkins (1884-1947), famed editor of the publishing house Charles Skribnerz Sons', who became his mentor and close friend. The book was favorably received by critics. In 1930, having received the Guggenheim Fellowship, Wolfe broke with Mrs. Bernstein, and went to Europe. During the Great Depression (1929-1933) he led a lonely life in Brooklyn and in the end, driven by Perkins, finished second novel, Time and the River (Of Time and the River, 1935) - about the future life of his hero by Eugene Gant. This book is also a great success. On his creative method, Wolfe said in an essay The Story of a novel (The Story of a novel, 1936; rus. translated 1974)
