. Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann was born on January 24, 1776 in KцІnigsberg (East Prussia)
. At an early age discovered the talents of a musician and painter. Studied law at the University of KцІnigsberg, then twelve years served as court officials in Germany and Poland. In 1808, a love of music inspired Hoffman to take the post of theatrical conductor in Bamberg, six years later, he led the orchestra in Dresden and Leipzig. In 1816 he returned to public service advisor to the Berlin Court of Appeals, where he served until his death, July 24, 1822.

The brilliant imagination, combined with strict and transparent style Hoffmann provided a special place in German literature. The action of his works are almost never happened in distant lands - as a rule, it puts its incredible heroes in everyday situation. Hoffman had a strong influence on Poe and some French writers, several of his stories formed the basis for the libretto of the famous opera - Skazkok Hoffmann (1870) by J. Offenbach.

All the works of Hoffmann showed his talents as a musician and artist. Many of his creations, he illustrated himself. From the musical works of ETA Hoffmann used the best-known opera Undine (Undine), first staged in 1816, among his works - chamber music, the Mass, a symphony. As a music critic he showed in his articles is the understanding of music of Beethoven, which could boast a few of his contemporaries. Hoffman is so deeply revered Mozart, even changed one of their names, William, Amadou. He has influenced the work of his friend K.M.fon Weber and R. Hoffmann, Schumann compositions so impressed that he named his Kreyslerianu in honor of Kapellmeister Kreisler, a hero of several works of Hoffmann.
