Biography Karmal Barbakh (Karmal Babrak)
(1929-1996) Born near Kabul on Jan. 6, 1929. He was educated at Kabul University, where he became acquainted with Marxist ideas. He was imprisoned, after his release he served in the Army. Returned to university to complete the legal education. One of the founders of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) in 1965-1973 was a member of the National Assembly. In 1978, was promoted to deputy prime minister, then was sent as ambassador to Czechoslovakia. After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan became the president. In November 1986, resigned from his post, declaring the impossibility to perform their duties because of deteriorating health. Soon he moved to Moscow. Karmal died in Moscow on December 3, 1996.
