Biography Leconte de Lisle, Charles Marie Renц?
(1818-1894) Born October 22, 1818 in St Paul (Rц?union). His first book of verse were Ancient Poems (Pomes antiques, 1852), reinterpreted classic themes. Behind them followed the barbaric poem (Pomes barbares, 1862). Leconte de Lisle translated many ancient authors - Theocritus, Hesiod, Homer, Aeschylus, Horace, Sophocles, Euripides. Translations of his distinguished by thoroughness and accuracy. In 1884 they released another collection of poetry Leconte de Lisle, tragic poem (Pomes tragiques), and in 1895, posthumously, - Last Poems (Derniers pomes). Leconte de Lisle - a recognized leader of the group 'parnassians'. He was interested not only of antiquity, but the East. One of his view was opposed to Christianity, the ancient wisdom: first, it seemed gloomy and degrading people, the second - a joyous and proud. In 1886 he was elected to the French Academy. Died Leconte de Lisle in Luvsenne, near Versailles, July 18, 1894.
