MERGENTALER Otmar (Mergenthaler Ottmar)

(1854-1899)
Born May 11, 1854 in Hahtele (Wц?rttemberg). At age 14, enrolled in the hour-long workshop. In 1872 he moved to the U.S.. He worked in the store of scientific instruments and tools in Washington. Once he had to eliminate the defects in one of the new models of a typewriter, and this work led him to the idea of creating a typesetting machine, eliminating manual collection of font. In 1884 Mergentaler completed work on the creation of the first strokootlivnoy typesetting machine - Linotype. Received in 1884 a patent for his invention, together with Dzh.Klefeynom founded the company to produce linotypes. The first machines were installed in a typesetting shop in New York newspaper 'Tribune' in 1886. In 1888 due to disagreements with the board of directors Mergentaler left the company, but continued to work to improve their car and offered more than 50 enhancements. Mergentaler died in Baltimore on Oct. 28, 1899.
