Biography Erich Maria Remarque (Remarque Erich Maria)
(1898-1970) Born June 22, 1898 in Osnabrц?ck. Widespread fame brought him a book about the First World War on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues, 1929). Chronicle ruined by the war generation continued in the novel The Return (Der Weg zurck, 1931), the tale of the struggle of war veterans for their place in society. In the three comrades (Drei Kameraden, 1937) the heroes are trying to find itself among the economic and political chaos of postwar Germany. Novels Love your neighbor (Liebe deinen Nchsten, 1941) and Arc de Triomphe (Arc de Triomphe, 1946) dedicated to the fate of refugees from Nazi Germany and the Black Obelisk (Der schwarze Obelisk, 1956) depicts the era of the Great Depression in Europe. Last Remarque's novel, The Night in Lisbon (Die Nacht von Lissabon, 1962), tells of the refugees who lost their homeland during the Second World War. Remarque died in Locarno (Switzerland) 25 September 1970.
