Biography Romulo, Carlos Pena
(1899-1985)
Born January 14, 1899 in Kamilinge, studied at the University of the Philippines in Manila (Issue 1918) and Columbia University, where in 1921 received a master's degree. Joined the delegation sent to the U.S. for talks on the independence of the colonies. Took up journalism, and in 1933-1941 was the publisher of several newspapers manila. For a series of articles on military and political situation in the Far East was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. December 10, 1941, three days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, was appointed aide commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific D. MacArthur. He served as press secretary M. Quezon in Australia, in 1945 was promoted to Brigadier General.
In 1945 Romulo - a member of the Philippine delegation to the UN founding conference in San Francisco, since 1946 the Permanent Representative of the Philippines in the UN. Since 1949 Chairman of the UN General Assembly in 1950-1951, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, in 1951-1953, Ambassador to the United States. In 1953 Romulo was involved in the presidential elections, but withdrew his candidacy in favor of R. Magsaysaya. In 1954 he was appointed Ambassador to the Philippines to the United States, held the post under former President Carlos Garcia. Remained constant representative of the Philippines in the UN. . In 1962 Romulo was president of University of the Philippines. In 1969 he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and remained in that post until 1984. Died Romulo in Manila on Dec. 15, 1985.
